FAQ -Frequently Asked Questions

What is Models with Conscience?
We are an international group of fashion models specializing in promoting cruelty-free products. Founded in 1998, Models with Conscience has quickly grown to include members of various ages, sizes, backgrounds, nationalities and looks. Amid their diversity, they all share a genuine compassion for animals and a dedication to being fully radiant without harming animals.

What is your mission statement?
Models with Conscience operates on the premise that models are irresistibly radiant when their conscience is clear--when they feel completely positive about the product they are presenting, the manner in which they are presenting it, and the fact that no living creature was tortured or killed in the making of that product. Such cruelty-free products include cosmetics, hair care products and fragrances which are not tested on animals, and clothing and accessories which are not made with animal fur. To further promote the welfare of animals in our world, Models with Conscience donates a portion of its profits to animal-friendly charities. Models with Conscience reserves the right to refuse service in any situation which is contrary to the model's personal ethics.

How did Models with Conscience start?

Our group's founder, Heather Chase, explains, "Throughout my life, many people encouraged me to become a fashion model. I had done some modeling, but was reluctant to pursue it full-time because I perceived it as a superficial career. Then, I learned about animal testing in the cosmetics industry and fur used in the fashion industry. I was deeply saddened by the cruelty inflicted on animals for the sake of human vanity, and began buying cruelty-free products exclusively. Soon, I realized that I can do even more to help animals by encouraging other people to use cruelty-free products, and that I can do this on a large scale though modeling. So, I founded Models with Conscience with the mission of radiantly representing cruelty-free products."

Is your organization a modeling agency?

No, our directors do not charge commission for serving as the liaison between our members and companies interested in hiring them for modeling projects, and each member is an independent contractor who negotiates his or her own rates.

Where is Models with Conscience based?

Our main office is located in Sedona, Arizona, USA. Our members live throughout the world and will happily travel for modeling assignments.

Why do you promote cruelty-free products?

We feel strongly that too many animals are abused and killed in the traditional cosmetics and apparel industries. For example, many companies test their products on animals, causing an estimated 14 million animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, etc.) to die each year. Yet, in the USA no law requires that cosmetics, personal care or household products be tested on animals. Animal testing does not ensure that a product will be safe on humans, and many alternative testing methods have proven more reliable and less expensive. Another example is the fur trade, in which an estimated 100 million animals (minks, foxes, chinchillas, etc.) are killed each year to provide fur for apparel. Most of these animals die agonizing deaths either by crude traps set in their natural habitat, or by electrocution, gassing, decompression or poisoning on so-called fur farms. Yet, there are numerous substitutes for real fur including high-quality faux fur, warm synthetic insulating fibers, luxurious velvet and more. By promoting cruelty-free products, Models with Conscience strives to protect animals from needless suffering and death, to help advance companies offering humane alternatives, and to inspire consumers to choose products they can enjoy with a clear conscience.

Where can I get a list of cruelty-free companies?

A great source is Heather's book, Beauty Without the Beasts. You may learn more about it in the Products section of this website. Lists are also available from animal protection groups such as The National Anti-Vivisection Society, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (see Lynx).

How are your affiliated models chosen?

Those interested in joining Models with Conscience are asked to complete our "Questionnaire for Prospective Models", write a required essay and submit photos of themselves. Our directors review these materials and, on occasion, interview the candidate to determine whether or not he or she is suitable for doing our unique type of modeling. Our idea of beauty goes beyond the typical runway model look, so we do not select members according to conventional parameters such as height, weight, age, race/ethnicity, or formal modeling experience. Instead, we look for four primary qualities: 1) genuine, demonstrated compassion for animals, 2) pleasing physical appearance, 3) radiant, confident presence in front of the camera, and 4) positive, cooperative disposition. When our directors conclude that the candidate possesses all of these qualities, we welcome him or her to our team.

How much modeling experience do your members have?

As indicated above, we do not require a minimum level of modeling experience or training. We welcome new faces! Our affiliated models range from beginners to professionals. To assist companies who are considering hiring them, the men and women featured in our Profiles section are each identified as either "up-and-coming" (beginner - intermediate), or "accomplished" (intermediate - professional).
